Cleaning and disinfecting PAC mattresses without damaging covers02nd May 2019 Last month at EBME Expo 2019 in Milton Keynes, Talley showcased some impressive results looking at the impact of immersing a selection of PAC mattress covers into chlorine solutions and running a direct comparison against TECcare CONTROL. The test took place over several weeks and looked at the following disinfectant solutions;
All of the mattress cover material exposed to chlorine showed significant discolouration, delamination and destruction of the fabrics integrity. Click here for more information. In contrast, the fabric immersed in TECcare CONTROL showed no discolouration, no delamination and no evidence of any damage whatsoever! This initial testing clearly highlights how aggressive and damaging chlorine solutions can be – even at the ‘standard’ 1,000ppm concentration. Chlorine based disinfectants are cheap, readily available and possess broad antimicrobial activity, however they are aggressive and highly destructive on surfaces. Although chlorine disinfectants are ‘low-cost’, healthcare budget holders must consider the repair and replacement costs of fixtures, fittings, furniture and medical devices damaged by frequent and ongoing chlorine exposure.
